Backstage Marketing: Building vs. Selling
We recently wrote about the fact that we have not had to “market” the Nella brand much in the last 5 years, and the truth of it is that there is so much you can be doing behind the social media profiles to strengthen your marketing efforts.
It's these processes that will lead to word of mouth testimonials. It’s not enough to just digitize your business. You have to digitize your reputation, too. So where do you start? Here are a few things to think about.
The right people in the right places.
If there’s one thing we know it’s the importance of having the right people in the right places. The big question: does your hiring process reflect the promises you make on your website? For Nella, wellbeing is a big part of our business and we make sure to build that into our interview process too. It’s important, not just to tick off boxes when you’re hiring but to work with people who you can truly trust to take over as you grow because this ownership of roles is everything when it comes to building the client experience.
Processes reflecting promises.
HOW your business runs is everything. Processes are the roots of your business. Without roots, your business cannot function well enough to thrive. In fact, we would take it one step further than that. If you’ve ever watched that documentary about Fantastic Fungi, you’ll have learned about mycelium, a vast underground network of roots that connects the trees. “In healthy forests, each tree is connected to others via this network, enabling trees to share water and nutrients.” Your processes function like this, connecting the different elements of your business. This is why we integrate with our clients' businesses. We want to understand how your marketing fits into your ecosystem.
Digitizing your reputation.
What does your digital reputation look like? If you’re prioritizing urgent responses over quality responses, you’re overlooking a key piece of your marketing. This principle applies to Google and Facebook reviews, sure, but it also applies to messages, comments, and the tone of your emails. Slowing down isn’t necessarily a business killer. In fact, we’ve found that the services that automate responses can dehumanize the process and what people really need right now, is proper connection.
Are you selling? Or building.
Where is your mindset? Of course, money is a huge motivator when it comes to driving business. But selling for the sake of selling can suck the warmth out of your business. How your business feels to work with is just as important as what it is you're selling. It’s important to remember that when you meet with clients and it’s important to remember that when you show up online too.
